Staff Employment: Counselors Needed – Junior and Senior Level
Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) is a community based organization located in Brooklyn that provides a year round, unique, integrated service model that meets the distinctive needs of children with an incarcerated parent(s). CPNYC’s mission is to provide children of prisoners with guidance, support and the resources necessary to effectively develop leadership skills, form positive social relationships and enhance academic performance. Implementing the principles and best practices of youth development, this innovative after-school and summer program infuses a mental health model.
Job Description – The Counselor works collaboratively with program staff and assists with the development and implementation of age and grade appropriate curriculum for our after school program. The age range of our participants is 6 to 18.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement the CPNYC curriculum, helping school age children improve literacy competencies, values, and physical fitness in an activity based environment.
- Plan and create innovative age appropriate activities and develop lesson plans to conduct them on a daily basis; read, tell stories, lead songs and games.
- Ensure the health, safety, and well being of children in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.
- Maintain enrollment, daily attendance records and emergency contacts for each participant; assure classrooms and other shared space is well maintained and clean.
- Assist children with homework and guide students in their academic growth.
- Escort children from school to CPNYC in a safe and timely manner.
- Understand and communicate the philosophy and goals of the CPNYC Program to the students and families.
- Provide families with weekly feedback about their child’s strengths and areas that need additional attention.
- Assuring accurate distribution and accounting of snacks.
- Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
- A minimum of 15 hours of staff training during the school is required.
Skills
- Ability to teach, motivate, and influence children in a team environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills including a strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
- Enjoys organizing academic enrichment activities.
- Extremely reliable and patient.
- Comfortable working with a diverse population within a non-profit environment.
Education
- Junior Counselor – Minimum B.A. /B.S. in Professional Child Care, Education, Social Work, or related field.
- Senior Counselor – Completed Masters Degree, same fields as above
- ALL Levels – Minimum two years teaching experience working with youth and families from diverse backgrounds
Hours
After School Program: Monday-Friday 3:00pm-6:30pm

Student Internships

Internship Description
- Make a difference in a child’s life while gaining valuable skills and experience for your future career goals. If you’re studying education, social work, counseling, criminal justice, or psychology our summer program provides an excellent internship opportunity.
Key Areas of Internship
- Help school age children improve their literacy, math, and science competencies.
- Support activity specialist with their lesson plans (physical ed., music, art, spoken word)
- Help staff plan and create innovative age appropriate activities to conduct on a daily basis. Read, tell stories, and lead songs and games.
- Assist staff with daily attendance records and emergency contacts records for each participant; assure classrooms and other shared space is well maintained and clean.
- Attend off site field trips (biking, roller skating, amusement parks, museums, nature walks, etc..)
Eligibility:
- At least a second or third year student in good standing is preferred.
- Students enrolled in Child Education; Special Education; Teacher Education; Early Childhood Education; Human Services; Social Work; Psychology; Counseling; Criminal Justice.
- Available July 9th – August 31st (training 3-4 days late June, exact dates tbd)
- Excellent team player, Enthusiastic, Reliable

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Hours: M/W/F 8:00am-1:30pm, M/W/F 12:00pm-5:30pm, OR Tues/Thurs 8:00am-5:30pm
General Information: A $500 stipend is available.
